Chapter 15

The library wasn’t that busy when I turned up later. Rhiannon was sitting behind the reception desk reading a book.

I smiled at her, hoping she’d recognise me. She must have done because her face turned a little paler. I got the feeling she wasn’t pleased to see me.

She put her book down, and gave me a smile which didn’t reach her eyes. “Good afternoon. How can I help you today?”

I’d already thought about how I could raise the subject of Henri McCallister. I’d decided it was best to jump straight in.

“Hello,” I began. “I don’t know if you recognise me, but I was at the café during the book club meeting. I’m Karis Booth. I run the café with my sister.”

“Yes, I remember you.” Her look gave nothing away.

I carried on. “It’s such a shame about Henri, isn’t it? And such a shock too.” I leaned a bit closer to her as if ready to impart some secret. “Between you and me, I didn’t think much of Henri. I know you shouldn’t speak badly of the dead, but I took an instant dislike to him. I imagine a lot of people felt that way about him.”

Her look turned guarded. “I wouldn’t know about that.”

I shook my head. “I couldn’t believe how he made that poor Ruby Sparkle read out those passages from her book. It was so obvious she didn’t want to. And what do you think they meant? Those passages? Do you think they were based on anyone she knew? Or someone Henri knew?”

She looked down at her book. “I really couldn’t say. I wasn’t paying much attention. I had other things on my mind.”

She was such a bad liar.

I was just about to launch into my next carefully thought-out sentence when I heard a commotion behind me. Rhiannon heard it too and looked that way. She instantly stiffened and her eyes went wide.

I looked over my shoulder, and saw a nervous-looking young woman standing there. Her gaze was fixed on Rhiannon like a spotlight. She made the slightest of gestures with her head as if beckoning Rhiannon over.

I looked back at Rhiannon to find her rising from her chair. She said to me, “Excuse me, I have a customer to deal with. If you have any enquiries relating to the library, any member of staff will be able to help you.” With those dismissive words, she walked towards the woman. They greeted each other with the slightest of nods before turning their backs on me.

A familiar feeling washed over me, and I quickly made my way over to an upholstered seat next to a bookcase. I managed to sit down just as a vision came to me.

In my vision, I saw the woman who Rhiannon was talking to dressed in a wedding gown. It was a beautiful sunny day and she was walking down a path and towards a church. Rhiannon was at her side, dressed in a lilac, satin dress.

The bride said to Rhiannon, “I can’t thank you enough for this.
